The "American Dream"; we´ve all heard of it, but to most of us it´s history, a dusty illusion from days forgotten. For Edward and Faina Shapiro, however, their American Dream is alive and well and named, aptly, Diamond Dream Jewelers.
Entering America in 1979 with ninety dollars and two suitcases, Edward Shapiro and his parents knew no English, but were familiar with the illusive American Dream. As a boy growing up in Kiev, Ukraine, Edward somehow knew that life might hold something special for him. Though not sure what that special something was, Edward held onto the feeling. realized with certainty that the dream forming in his mind and heart could come true. Watching the rough stones and metal take shape to become artful treasures inspired Edward to continue forward toward that treasured dream. He learned practical knowledge of jewelry as an apprentice, became an established diamond setter, and studied further at the Gemological Institute of America. Coupled with this jewelry knowledge was Edward´s deep respect of old-world values; respect for people, doing a job completely and well, and taking pride in everything that you do.
Meanwhile, another young immigrant was pursuing her own goal of earning a degree in accounting from Brooklyn College. Born in Minsk Belarus, Faina was raised with the same old-world values. She was also gifted with a wonderful sense of style and fashion, which began to thrive in the New York environment. Upon meeting Edward, her sense of style became centered around his love of jewelry.
Armed with their respective educations and a love of serving people, Edward and Faina opened their first business in 1985, a small kiosk at the American Way Mall in Fairfield, New Jersey. From that point on, northern New Jersey became their home. Today, they are the proud owners of two fine stores, Diamond Dream Jewelers of Rockaway and Bernardsville.
