Since 1884, the name of Breitling stands for chronographs. A specialist in technical watches, the brand played a key role in the development of the wristworn chronograph – for which in particular it invented the two independent-pushpiece control system. Thanks to its broad range of “instruments for professionals”, Breitling has actively contributed to the boom in sports, science and industry – in short, to all the main fields of an era of speed and records that no longer counts in days, hours, minutes but in seconds and fractions of a second. In 1999, its concern for precision led it to have all its movements chronometer-certified – a first among the major watch brands. And in 2009, the launch of its own chronograph movement, a high-performance “motor” produced using unusual methods, set the crowning touch to this longstanding quest for innovation, excellence and independence.
For five generations, Breitling has also stood for aviation. Through its extreme concern for quality, the brand rapidly gained favor among aviation pioneers who needed reliable and accurate instruments. Thanks to these pocket and later wristworn chronographs, the brand accompanied the finest hours in the conquest of skies, befor becoming the “official supplier to world aviation” with its cockpit chronographs, and winning over pilots and aviation enthusiasts around the world with its famous Navitimer slide-rule chronograph.
Such is the rich history that we wished to tell in words and images, the beautiful adventure so intimately bound up with that of modern times. This unique and dynamic trajectory with its ups and downs, its straight lines and its cross-paths, yet all consistently directed towards the same goal, the same vocation: a determination to excel; the pursuit of performance; a taste for challenges….The chronograph spirit.
The Breitling spirit.
