Diamond Planet Cancri E
Most recently an image of a new found planet has been creating a large amount of buzz around the internet. This planet, Cancri E has been found to be full of diamonds, which is a new phenomenon to astronomers.
Scientists discovered Cancri E 40 light years away from the Earth and believe that the planet is far denser than any other known planet thus far. After several tests and collecting data, scientists have concluded that Cancri E consists mostly of carbon. The planet is so dense that makes scientists believe that the carbon must be crystalline, and therefore the planet is almost completely full of diamonds
“The evolutionary history and amazing density of the planet all suggest it is comprised of carbon – i.e. a massive diamond orbiting a neutron star every two hours in an orbit so tight it would fit inside our own Sun” said Matthew Bailes of Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne.
Scientists are now searching and grabbing data from other planets that they believe are very similar to the Cancri E. Be on the lookout for more information and photos as these planets are discovered!
